Candour beauty guide: Hair & Scalp care
The skin on your scalp is thicker than on your face and has about 100,000 hair follicles within it. Whilst a great scalp care routine will help maintain the health of your scalp and hair, you also need to maintain a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle.
Like the skin on your face, your scalp needs to be clean, moisturised and healthy to thrive. Using the right products in the right way will then ensure that your scalp stays in balance
Like your skin, there are different types of scalp and each have different concerns and different products that can benefit.
Hair products, sweat, dead skin cells and natural oils can all build up on your scalp, leading to irritation, blocked pores and dull hair that grows slowly. By making sure that your scalp is clean and healthy, you can maintain healthy hair and avoid skin conditions like a flaky scalp, blocked pores or dermatitis.
Good scalp care can prevent damage to your hair and scalp, rather than having to deal with the consequences of not taking care of it properly.
Exfoliating your scalp can be really simple. Like facial exfoliators, you can physically or chemically exfoliate your scalp.
Physical exfoliation can be as easy as using a comb or brush to remove dead skin cells and buildup. You may also choose to invest in a scalp scrub to manually exfoliate debris from your scalp - these use small particles to remove dead skin and product from your hair and scalp.
When it comes to chemical exfoliation, some hair care products use salicylic acid to balance out an oily scalp. This can make curly, coily or textured hair feel dry so check the labels before you pick up a scrub.
Be gentle when you exfoliate and use a good conditioner or hair treatment afterwards to replenish moisture and balance your scalp. Focus on the ends of your hair where it’s usually driest.
